Normally we refer to short-selling and this is a very common thing that happens in financial markets (and there is another video on this). This video covers the topic of naked short-selling that is sometimes spoken about especially during times of market stress - it was a very hot topic in 2008 and became illegal in a number of countries at that time.

This is an introductory video to some of the structures, products and services that we as investors have to consider on a regular basis. It builds on the concepts and examples of products of the other videos - in this series the items discussed are often more specific, and often specific to a country or region as opposed to being more generic and potentially available in many regions.
As you know, it is ... By: savingandinvesting. on 22 Apr 09, 08:56:48 As you know, it is very difficult to time markets in the short-term. Having said that clearly there is still a lot of earnings risk and poor economic news potentially to come and I tend to agree with you. Having said that, and even despite that, this would not keep me from for example contributing to a 401k with a long-term view because first of all no one knows for sure what? will happen near-term, 2. the tax savings are so compelling and 3. dollar-cost averaging will work in my favour.
do you think in ... By: shakaama. on 20 Apr 09, 14:18:20 do you think in today's market, people should be reducing to cash and just saving cash? I suspect we have not seen the bottoms at? all and the worst is yet to come.
Everyone is trying to say how everything is positive and has turned around. I completely don't agree. Even bonds right now are being flooded on the market by the Fed.
The volume of issue of CDOs and the corresponding ability of banks to issue mortgages had a significant impact on the quantity of mortgages that could be made by banks. This video explores the topic of securitization further with a particular focus on CDOs and how that relates to the sub-prime crisis.

Mutton securities dressed up as lamb(apologies for vegeterians out there for the analogy). In Europe this is happening again under the noses of everybody.
The euro itself is a veneer under which sub-prime assets (dodgy government bond s are priced in at the risk free rate) and in the process fuelling an unsustainable and potentially disastrous expansion of credit.

By: savingandinvesting. on 03 Mar 11, 09:42:55 @Jonchess A lot - depending on the numbers you look at - trillions of dollars, directly or indirectly fuelling lower lending standards, mortgage related bankruptcies, the failure of many financial institutions and playing a significant role in subsequent bailouts of major financial services firms across the globe. It is one of the key elements of global financial crisis. The book 'The Big Short' or the movie 'Inside Job' cover aspects of all of this in a fairly interesting and entertaining? way.

So they divided ... By: elwalvador. on 14 Mar 09, 00:17:23 So they divided essentially worthless mortgage back securities into 3 traunches and sold off the "senior" traunch as a "tiple-A" rated investment? I wonder if the buyers of these so called senior debt even knew what they were actually buying. Because if they did, they? never would have bought it. And if they didn't understand what a CDO is then they shoulnd't have bought it.

Deflation very much related to the subject of inflation, and in fact is a negative rate of inflation (i.e. prices are falling) for a sustained period of time. This video introduces deflation and some of the issues associated with it.

By: Davidbzm01. on 01 Feb 10, 23:57:51
This guy said "they will always be high" This guy doesn't understand that if EVERYONE stopped using the credit cards. All at the same time. The credit company will notice that your money isnt flowing into their pockets anymore and FIX IT. I don't mean stop using cards forever. Just stop long enough for? the banks to see WE HAVE THE CONTROL... Its as easy as just NOT using the card. When the money stops flowing they WILL HEAR YOU. No Violence, No weapons, No laywers. Just say NO.
By: Davidbzm01. on 01 Feb 10, 23:50:46
Everyone. Here's how you fix it Take that credit card and cut it up. CALL THEM and cancel the account. Don't just stop using it because they are currently working on a new penalty charge for "NOT USING" your card. They WILL get the message when 40 million people call them up and say NO. They wont have a choice but to fix it. When your? money stops flowing into? their pockets. They will hear you. No violence. No weapons. No lawyers. Just stop using the card and they WILL FOLD Easy as that.

This guy is an apologist for the? usurers? Interest rates on credit cards used to be much lower. The amount of profit these companies make is atrocious. That's why everyone gets a new credit card offer every day. It's like sending a hooker to a man's front door. Run up your credit cards to the max - and don't pay them anything.

I say we should got back to be able to? deduct credit card interest on our Federal taxes. Then interest rates will come down. The Feds would make sure of it.

its very rare but there are banks that lend only as much money as they have. and you earn lendable money by saving money over time... (the longer you have x sum of money in the bank then you can lend a similar? sum over a similar sum of time... its something like that... which is a more honest system. (because it isent creating false money!)
By: ZerqTM. on 16 May 09, 19:18:10
i am? also considering moving my money to a bank that does not use franctional serverve lending too just so the banks can use my money to devalue the currency. (banks make money from nothing stealing the value of your money)
