I have seen many cases online at Alameda County Superior Court and there are tons of collections lawsuits by MAJOR banks over some debts as small as $700.? Your credit report should not include negative information for more than 7 years, but that is not to say that the company you owe money to would not be able to hold a grudge longer than that.

Suppose three years from now you get sued (or if you're being sued now...)--if they can get a judgment it would last in Missouri (example) for 10 years (and easily be renewed for 10 more). And all that time it's a lien on some of your property and a risk that they will seize assets or garnish wages. Don't let 'em if you can help it!

That saved me about $20K, so I could imagine it would save you about $30K in the future. So take that $123K and turn it into $93K and minus $32K from scholarships (4*8K) and you are left with $61,000 which you could pay off in about 7 years if you pay $10K per year.

If you go to college for a degree that pays at least $40K per year (ideally $50K+) starting out. Also, apply for scholarships because everyone should be able to get at least $5,550 per year unless you make a lot of money. By the time 2034 rolls around, it may be about $8,000, so you may still be stuck with $107K. If you pay $10K per year, you can pay it off in 15 years. Beats working minimum wage.

Look at how us Canadians do it. Only public universities can achieve certification, they're heavily subsidized? (I go to Law School for 8k/year, with a good market for lawyers atm), and high standards are rigidly enforced. I've only ever gone to top schools, have no debt (worked since I was 14, took a year after graduating undergrad, with ~25k from parents), and I own a house. Try doing that in the US.
