In fact, it is only through govt. that we can ameliorate the situation regarding corporations gaining too much power and it is the change in regulation and govt laws (i.e., Deregulation) that has allowed corporate power to become such a problem. Corporations only do what they are allowed to and can get away with, depending? on the laws in place since their mandate is to make money (and our only real recourse against corps is to not buy their products.)

No. It's measured by comparison? to GDP. If you want to have any idea of the true value of something, you can't compare today's deficit to yesterday's deficit if you don't adjust for how much less something cost in that era. Doing otherwise means that you are comparing today, when a cup of coffee costs over a dollar to when it cost a nickel. You aren't thinking in terms of the comparison to values from then to today.

Or would that mean having to admit that your "hero" Bush didn't do such a great job and ran up a huge debt by giving tax cuts to the people least in need of tax cuts and who grew the military to such massive proportions that it is building the deficit out of all proportions. After WWII, we had a massive deficit (larger than today's by comparison to GDP) and yet we were able to pay down that debt because of high taxes on the wealthy.

Obama just proposed combining 6 different agencies into one and reducing the overlap of these agencies to make them more efficient and cost less (they were all to do with trade, business, etc.) It's going to save 11 billion dollars over the next 10 years and no one will lose their jobs directly. Deregulation has been the problem all along. Allowing the banks to become "too big to fail" was done on Bush's watch. We do need to cut govt spending, but not at the expense of? creating jobs and prosperity which when combined with reasonable taxes on those who can pay more will bring down the govt. debt. Supply side economic doesn't work, if it did, we would not have massive debt. Taxes on the wealthy have been going down for years but the debt just goes up. Not hard to figure out.
