Some 2,100 graduates, their families and friends crowded into Moody Coliseum for Commencement on May 12, 2012. The featured speaker was former U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice.

Founders Day at SMU, held April 20-21, 2012, mixed family fun with tributes to SMU's founding, faculty presentations and the announcement of plans for the future. It included the dedication of the Centennial Cornerstone and groundbreaking of SMU's new Residential Commons complex.
On May 19, 1995, SMU announced the establishment of the Maguire Center for Ethics and Public Responsibility to promote SMU's and Dallas' dedication to upholding high ethical and moral standards. Taking part in the announcement were SMU Interim President James E. Kirby, SMU Board Chair Robert Dedman, benefactor Cary Maguire, and Professor William F. May, the center's first director.
Former U.S. Secretary of State Henry Kissinger spoke at SMU on March 27, 2002, at the invitation of the Maguire Center for Ethics and Public Responsibility. He discussed the changing nature of American power in the wake of the September 11 attacks.
SMU Professor Rita Kirk, director of the Cary M. Maguire Center for Ethics & Public Responsibility, discusses the ethics of a website about violence along the Texas-Mexico that was created by Texas Agriculture Commissioner Todd Staples.
