Garlits did confirm that SR-19 (Swamp Rat 19-1973)did have them for a very short time. He did say that he had handling trouble from the very first run and discarded them soon after. He then told me that NHRA outlawed them a short time later. The cars today are so fast and? powerful, it's less and less common to just walk away from a crash like this.

They were very popular in 1973, but led to some? crashes. NHRA outlawed them soon after that same year. This one was definitely the motor letting go, though. I was there when this happened. You can't see it on video but a big storm was moving in and there was a lightning strike in the back ground as Eddie Hill? blasted down the track. It rained hard about 10 minutes later. It was such a bad storm I think a kid in the parking lot got hit by lightning. That run was a good 5 hundreths quicker than anything ever at the time. It stood as the quickest run for 364 days if I remember correctly.

Johnny did all of his own work because he was a poor kid. Johnny went to school and worked at the same time to support building those cars. Johnny was a hell of a guy that anyone would instantly like, he laughed all the time as I remember. It's so sad to know? that he's gone. Thank God that I was lucky enough to know him personally. RIP Johnny.

I remember that he had more than one incident before he died and I thought there was a problem with his driving. I just found a site saying that he had very little understanding of mechanics and that nearly caused a crash when he destroyed the clutch and didn't lift.?
