But for work, Linux makes snot out of Windows. Except for audio. There are some good Linux audio things like Ardor, but it doesn't have effects (or I haven't figured out how to add the plugins to Ardor yet. I tried making LMMS for Linux, but I don't understand how to make things yet.
In windows I have some pretty good opensource audio programs. So, I'll? have to go back and forth until I understand installing.

You were using vista, ouch. Glad to hear you can use mint instead. Besides run virtualbox for windows only apps, it works great. The only things linux users miss is dx11 games and any decent adobe creative suite support. If you dont care about these two, why use windows.

"Passes" is an old? term in Cycles. In fact, it is no longer called "passes," but "samples." It's just an old habit I never dropped when the term changed.
Switch to Cycles Render, go to rendering options in the control panel, look for "integrator," hit the expand arrow, and "samples" can be found there, as "render" and "preview" SAMPLES. 0 means it renders forever.

A second test to try to get rid of noise in Blender Cycles, this time at 40 passes, using "#frame" as seed value. There is only one light in the scene, a sun lamp, now canted on the x and y. However, this time I lowered the shadow sample to 16 cm, and THAT got rid of ALL noise. So... that means that noise is a product of shadow size.
Blender Cycles test at 30 samples of using #frame for seed value to limit noise, trying to find the lowest number of samples needed for noiseless animation.
